SUMMARY:2025 Quartzfest Ham Radio Convention
DESCRIPTION:QuartzFest is special in part because it comes to life each year\, rising from nothing in a remote area of the Sonoran desert in the southwestern USA. Hundreds of Hams and their families and friends choose to unplug from their daily lives\, travel to and setup this desert community\, and immerse themselves in this week-long one-of-a-kind ham radio\, camping\, learning and living event. \n\n\n\nThe educational classes at QuartzFest offer something for everyone including those new to ham radio or even the most seasoned veteran. \n\n\n\nQuartzFest is a week-long ham radio\, camping\, learning and living event.\n\n\n\nQuartzFest is an ARRL Specialty Convention held in January  near Quartzsite\, Arizona in the United States. No other hamfest in the world brings together in one gathering so much innovation in mobile antenna systems\, mobile ham shacks\, recreational vehicles\, portable and mobile EMCOMM systems\, off-the-grid living\, alternative energy and radio education. \n\n\n\nWhat? Quartzfest© is an annual HAM Radio RV and tenters Boondocking event which is held inlate January every year with dates coinciding with the Quartzsite Arizona “RV Show”.When? SUMMARY:QUARTZFEST 2021
DESCRIPTION:From: https://quartzfest.org \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation About Quartz-Pause 2021\n\n QUARTZFEST is now “QUARTZ-PAUSE” 2021  \nYES\, Quartzfest is now Quartz-PAUSE 2021\, same BLM place\, same station\, same excitement \, Sunday January 17  through Saturday January 23rd\, 2021.  \n“NOTHING WILL BE ORGANIZED”….just like the first 4 years of Quartzfest 25 years ago! WHO IS IN CHARGE???….NO ONE IS IN CHARGE!! We are all ON OUR OWN!!  \nCovid-19 precautions preclude our regular tent gatherings\, tent registrations\, packed seminars\, and the like. Social physical distancing and masks will keep us on-point to avoid any virus during this pandemic.  \nQuartz-PAUSE will continue to be radio ACTIVE.   Talk in on 146.550 simplex. Park ANYWHERE you want\, and leave more room to spare. Announcements in the morning and evening on 146.550.  \nYES\, the Main Fire Ring will be the focal point where there will be no close gatherings\, per management….oh….there is NO management this year……..  \nYES\, Frank is thinking about planning a day of guided and narrated 4-wheel. No visitors in the caravan vehicles\, suggested\, unless family. \n  \nYES\, one day will be a yard sale\, socially distanced\, and handle inspections of gear with gloves. ( some ham gear\, we do that anyway!) \n  \nYes\, Gary will have lots of ATV topics to see and hear in your own unit’s cable ready TV.  \nSocially distanced HOOTENANNY\, …we got the whole desert\, in our (sanitized) hands\, …Bring your gut-buckets and kazoos.  \nGOLD in them thar hills\, you say? Lots of room to separate and do some rock hounding….we got the whole mountains nearby….. Have you been to Quartz Hill\, about a half hour away?  \nthe BIG WHITE TENTS are coming to town\, the full week\, so mask-up and explore the RV show with no time limit to get back to Mile 99. \n  \nGEMS AND MINERALS\, just across the street in town – bring some home and tell your pals you “found” them in plain site at Quartzite\, Arizona. Be sure and stop in  \nat the formal store fronts that sell minerals – let’s support Quartzite Arizona businesses.  \nGO CLIMB A HILL….A SUMMIT….for SOTA activity one day. \n  \nI am told there are areas against the distant mountains where you can set up a pistol range for working those “sites” safely.  Masks AND ear protection advised. \nA day of Geocaching in the nearby open areas? Bring your GPS gear.  \nand….a day of ATVing looking for Quartz boulders? Just don’t be a claim jumper – most are sorta marked. And Yes\, we will put out some very old coins like last year\, for metal detecting. And yes\, we will have T hunting\, too.  \nP T ! FALL IN\, SOLDIERS! Start the day with a track run/walk around the perimeter\, and see all the antennas and solar.  \nPETS ALWAYS WELCOME\, but keep them safe on a leash\, and never EVER leave them outside on a line unattended – Coyotes\, not a 4-paws best friend.  \nOK OK OK….you get the point – this will be a fun laid back weeker on the desert floor\, RoadRunner BLM 14 day free stay location\, just like before. BUT WE WON’T BE ORGANIZED ONE BIT!!!  \nAnd this year\, no cramped gatherings in tents\, no porta potties\, no major PA systems for shoulder to shoulder seminars\, but lots of free time to do whatever ideas you come up with. Dream them up\, announce them on 146.550 MHz simplex\, and keep your fans separated. \n   \nThe big white tent in town will be open during the week. From what I’ve read\, they’ll have “one way” aisles in the tent to help with social distancing. Also\, the vendors across the street from the big tent will be open as well.  \nIf you have plans for a day that can include others socially distanced\, make sure you have your VHF rig tuned to 146.55 simplex at 8:00am every morning for our daily net. During that net you’ll be able to let us know what you have planned for those who may want to join you.  \nIf you want to set up a few Geocaches or set up hidden transmitters for a T-Hunt\, or any other activity that would be of interest to others\, that would be amazing.  \nThat’s all for now. Lyn and I are looking forward top seeing y’all in January. If you’re a member of our Quartzfest Facebook group\, make sure you go to our Quartzfest event page to let us know of your going top join us on he desert floor.  \n73\,  \nKris KR1SS & Lyn KJ7DSE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuartz – Pause 2021\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information\n\n  \nThis coming January’s Quartzfest\, which would have been our 25th annual Quartzfest\, has been put on “pause” due to Covid 19. However that doesn’t mean that no one will be attending “Quartz-Pause’ at our typical area at the Roadrunner BLM. Lyn and I will be there in our usual camping spot to socialize while social distancing. So\, keep the dates January 17th to 23rdon your winter travel calendar to attend “Quartz-Pause” with us. \nWhat will you be able to do while there? Well\, plenty: \nMorning walks\, in-town rock and minerals looking and enjoying the RV show and swap meet booths\, kite flying\, gold panning and metal detecting\, geocaching\, 4 wheelin’ “all on your own”. Yes\, we’ll have a daily (morning) net to hear from you of what you’ve been up to and what you have for the days plans if they can include others. \nQuartzfest 2022 will be our next scheduled Quartzfest and it will be held from January 23rd to 29th of 2022. \nPut both Quartz-Pause from January 17th to 23rd 2021 and Quartzfest 2022 from January 23rd to 29th 2022 on your winter schedules. \nSee you in January\, \nKris and Lyn

SUMMARY:QuartzFest 2020
DESCRIPTION:QuartzFest is a week-long ham radio\, camping\, learning and living event.\n\n\nQuartzFest 2020\, celebrating its 25th anniversary\, is an ARRL Specialty Convention being held January 19 to 25\, 2020 near Quartzsite\, Arizona in the United States. No other hamfest in the world brings together in one gathering so much innovation in mobile antenna systems\, mobile ham shacks\, recreational vehicles\, portable and mobile EMCOMM systems\, off-the-grid living\, alternative energy and radio education.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Very Unique Ham Radio Gathering\n\n\nQuartzFest is special in part because it comes to life each year\, rising from nothing in a remote area of the Sonoran desert in the southwestern USA. Hundreds of Hams and their families and friends choose to unplug from their daily lives\, travel to and setup this desert community\, and immerse themselves in this week-long one-of-a-kind ham radio\, camping\, learning and living event.\n\nThe educational classes at QuartzFest offer something for everyone including those new to ham radio or even the most seasoned veteran.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThey give participants the chance to put hands-on the latest technology\, learn ham radio for the first time\, study advanced radio theory and to even take a glimpse into the future of radio science. The learning also continues well-beyond the technical lectures all the way from morning coffee… through social events\, music\, arts and crafts classes during the day… and into the evening while sitting around the campfire or while star-gazing.\n\n\n\n\nSome History of Quartzfest\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Early Years\n\n\n1.    After informally meeting for several years with various ham radio/RV friends\,  beginning in 1995 near Mile Marker 99 about six miles south of Quartzsite\, Az\, Harvey K5LJM\, and Margie\, AB5ZX\, decided to officially host a ham gathering around the last week of January\, 1997. They called it Quartzfest and put the word out and had nearly 60 RVs that were parked around the site in the Sonoran Desert.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2.   It had a great area to gather for a daily 4:00 social hour every day and also to have a nightly campfire. The last of January was selected to coincide with the RV Sports and Vacation Show and the Gem and Mineral Show. They made it a week long event with seminars\, a ladies coffee\, beef stew dinner and different activities that were of interest to the group. It included volunteers to hold ham radio exams\, donut runs into the local bakery\, firewood gatherers\, and whatever else that added to the group’s enjoyment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3.   Harvey and Margie hosted Quartzfest through 2001 then turned it over to Bob\, WA7HRA\, and Anne Hart for 2002 and 2003 and then Harvey and Margie were hosts once again for the 2004 gathering – their last time. Harvey became ill with cancer in late 2004 so we turned to Cap Latimer\, WB6ZDF\, and Tom Hensley\, KD7ALH\, for help and they kindly filled in for us in 2005. Harvey passed away in February of 2005 but Quartzfest lived on with Tom\, KD7ALH\, and Sue\, KD7AMA\, Hensley hosting it in 2006 and 2007. Cliff\, KD4ZBP and Virginia\, KE4VRW\, Haycock hosted Quartzfest 2008\, 2009 and 2010. Now the torch has been passed on to Steve\, K04QT\, and Linda\, KI6JUD\, Weed. After the January 2015 gathering the coordination was turned over to new organizers Dave\, K1AN and Heather\, W8GEM with a newly established QuartzFest Planning Committee that also includes Gordo (WB6NOA)\, Kris (KR1SS)\, Marilynne (W6MCJ)\, Neil (W6FOG)\, Russ (KB6YAF) and Tracy (WA6ERA).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4.   Harvey always liked to call the gathering just a simple little campout in the desert with good friends sharing a common interest with ham radio and RVs. He thought it very important to have new people attend every year along with the regulars because you need fresh ideas and thinking to keep an event like this going and we tried our best to make everyone feel welcome.\n\nSince then Quartzfest has grown to include hundreds of ham radio enthuasists and their families. Margie Tetmeyer has continually expressed\, on behalf of Harvery and herself\, how grateful and thankful they are to everyone that has attended and participated in QuartzFest and welcomes the many new friends that will attend this “simple little campout” in the future.

Unfortunately\, no. We want to be sure you have every opportunity to attend our Programs\, visit Exhibitors\, get your QSL cards checked\, and generally focus on the meeting itself. \nQ2: The only two hotels within walking distance of the Convention Center are fully booked. If we drive downtown to the Convention Center\, will there be plenty of free parking?\nA. Yes — both at the Convention Center itself\, and in surrounding Parking Lot areas. \nQ3: Visalia Hotels are all along Route 198. Which hotel is the farthest distance from the Convention Center and how long will it take to drive there?\nA. The furthest hotel is the Wyndam Hotel — 5.5 miles from downtown. Because traffic is never heavy along Route 198\, the maximum driving time from any hotel should be no more than 10 minutes. \nQ4: Will there be shuttle buses from the hotels to the convention center in 2017?\nA. We will not be providing shuttle bus service because (1) it is prohibitively expensive\, and (2) very few attendees take advantage of the service since most drive their personal automobile to the convention. \nREGISTRATION INFO\n\n\n\nNote: Pre-Registration Ends On\nSunday\, March 31\, 2019 at 2400 UTC = 5:00 PM PDT\n\n\nThe IDXC 2019 Convention Pre-Registration Form Is Used\nFor ALL of the following items:\n\n\n\n\nConvention Pre-Registration\n\nFull Convention with Meals ($130)\nConvention Only\, no Meals ($60)\nMeals Only: Saturday Lunch ($15) or Saturday Banquet ($39)\, or Sunday Breakfast ($20)\nOptional Box Lunch for Friday\, April 12 only (($15)\n\n\nContest Academy Registration –This program runs from 8 am until noon\, and from 1 pm until 5 pm on Friday\, April 12\, 2019. of California\, approximately 230 miles (370 km) southeast of San Francisco\, 190 miles (310 km) north of Los Angeles\, and 36 miles (58 km) west of Sequoia National Park. The population was 124\,442 at the 2010 census. \nSettled in 1852\, Visalia is the oldest inhabited inland European settlement between Stockton and Los Angeles. It is the 5th largest city in the San Joaquin Valley after Fresno\, Bakersfield\, Stockton and Modesto\, the 44th most populous in California\, and 198th in the United States. \nAs the county seat of Tulare County\, Visalia serves as the economic and governmental center to one of the most productive single agricultural counties in the country. \nYosemite\, Sequoia\, and Kings Canyon National Parks are located in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains\, the highest mountain range in the contiguous United States. The summit of Mount Whitney\, 14\,505 feet (4\,421 m)\, is on the border between Tulare and Inyo counties. The western slopes of the Sierra are also home to the ancient Giant Sequoia\, some of the largest living single organisms on Earth. \nSee Wikipedia for more information about this fascinating city.
