DESCRIPTION:QuartzFest is a week-long ham radio\, camping\, learning and living event.\n\n\nQuartzFest 2020\, celebrating its 25th anniversary\, is an ARRL Specialty Convention being held January 19 to 25\, 2020 near Quartzsite\, Arizona in the United States. No other hamfest in the world brings together in one gathering so much innovation in mobile antenna systems\, mobile ham shacks\, recreational vehicles\, portable and mobile EMCOMM systems\, off-the-grid living\, alternative energy and radio education.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Very Unique Ham Radio Gathering\n\n\nQuartzFest is special in part because it comes to life each year\, rising from nothing in a remote area of the Sonoran desert in the southwestern USA. Hundreds of Hams and their families and friends choose to unplug from their daily lives\, travel to and setup this desert community\, and immerse themselves in this week-long one-of-a-kind ham radio\, camping\, learning and living event.\n\nThe educational classes at QuartzFest offer something for everyone including those new to ham radio or even the most seasoned veteran.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThey give participants the chance to put hands-on the latest technology\, learn ham radio for the first time\, study advanced radio theory and to even take a glimpse into the future of radio science. The learning also continues well-beyond the technical lectures all the way from morning coffee… through social events\, music\, arts and crafts classes during the day… and into the evening while sitting around the campfire or while star-gazing.\n\n\n\n\nSome History of Quartzfest\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Early Years\n\n\n1.    After informally meeting for several years with various ham radio/RV friends\,  beginning in 1995 near Mile Marker 99 about six miles south of Quartzsite\, Az\, Harvey K5LJM\, and Margie\, AB5ZX\, decided to officially host a ham gathering around the last week of January\, 1997. They called it Quartzfest and put the word out and had nearly 60 RVs that were parked around the site in the Sonoran Desert.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2.   It had a great area to gather for a daily 4:00 social hour every day and also to have a nightly campfire. The last of January was selected to coincide with the RV Sports and Vacation Show and the Gem and Mineral Show. They made it a week long event with seminars\, a ladies coffee\, beef stew dinner and different activities that were of interest to the group. It included volunteers to hold ham radio exams\, donut runs into the local bakery\, firewood gatherers\, and whatever else that added to the group’s enjoyment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3.   Harvey and Margie hosted Quartzfest through 2001 then turned it over to Bob\, WA7HRA\, and Anne Hart for 2002 and 2003 and then Harvey and Margie were hosts once again for the 2004 gathering – their last time. Harvey became ill with cancer in late 2004 so we turned to Cap Latimer\, WB6ZDF\, and Tom Hensley\, KD7ALH\, for help and they kindly filled in for us in 2005. Harvey passed away in February of 2005 but Quartzfest lived on with Tom\, KD7ALH\, and Sue\, KD7AMA\, Hensley hosting it in 2006 and 2007. Cliff\, KD4ZBP and Virginia\, KE4VRW\, Haycock hosted Quartzfest 2008\, 2009 and 2010. Now the torch has been passed on to Steve\, K04QT\, and Linda\, KI6JUD\, Weed. After the January 2015 gathering the coordination was turned over to new organizers Dave\, K1AN and Heather\, W8GEM with a newly established QuartzFest Planning Committee that also includes Gordo (WB6NOA)\, Kris (KR1SS)\, Marilynne (W6MCJ)\, Neil (W6FOG)\, Russ (KB6YAF) and Tracy (WA6ERA).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4.   Harvey always liked to call the gathering just a simple little campout in the desert with good friends sharing a common interest with ham radio and RVs. He thought it very important to have new people attend every year along with the regulars because you need fresh ideas and thinking to keep an event like this going and we tried our best to make everyone feel welcome.\n\nSince then Quartzfest has grown to include hundreds of ham radio enthuasists and their families. Margie Tetmeyer has continually expressed\, on behalf of Harvery and herself\, how grateful and thankful they are to everyone that has attended and participated in QuartzFest and welcomes the many new friends that will attend this “simple little campout” in the future.

Which hotel is the farthest distance from the Convention Center and how long will it take to drive there?\nA. The furthest hotel is the Wyndam Hotel — 5.5 miles from downtown. Because traffic is never heavy along Route 198\, the maximum driving time from any hotel should be no more than 10 minutes. \nQ4: Will there be shuttle buses from the hotels to the convention center in 2017?\nA. DESCRIPTION:https://www.winterfieldday.com\nWinter Field Day Purpose: \nTo foster Ham camaraderie\, field operation\, emergency operating preparedness\, and just plain on the air\, outdoor fun in the midst of winter for American\, Canadian and DX Amateurs. Don’t let those winter doldrums keep you locked up in the house… get out and play some radio!! \n\nWhen: Winter Field Day runs for 24 hours during the last full weekend in January each year from 1900 UTC (2pm EST) Saturday to 1900 UTC (2pm EST) Sunday. For 2019\, the dates are January 26th and 27th. Station set-up may commence no earlier than 1900 UTC (2pm EST) on Friday\, January 25th. Station setup may consume no more than 12 hours total. How & when you schedule/spend those 12 hours is up to you. \nBands: All Amateur bands\, HF\, VHF\, & UHF except 12\, 17\, 30 and 60 meters.\nModes: Any mode… CW\, SSB\, AM\, FM\, DStar\, C4FM\, DMR\, Packet\, PSK\, SSTV\, RTTY\, Olivia\, Satellite\, etc… \nSuggested Frequencies: (to make it easier for entrants to find each other) \nHF CW – 1810-1820\, 3.530-3.550\, 7.030-7.050\, 14.035-14.055\, 21.030-21.050\, 28.030-28.040 \nHF SSB – lowest 30 kHz of the US General Class Phone bands (160m- 15m)\, 28.400-28.425MHz (10m) 6m/VHF/UHF – adjacent to\, but not on\, nationally recognized simplex calling channels. \nEntry categories: (..if operating as a group under one call\, all stations in your entry must fit the category you choose. Also see further clarification in “definitions” below) \nIndoor: Operation from inside a remote\, insulated\, heated (or cooled\, depending on your local weather)\, and weather-protected structure where an Amateur station is normally not available. (Park buildings/cabins\, community center\, EOC\, senior center\, club shack\, etc). \nOutdoor: Operation from a location partly or fully exposed to the elements and at least 30 feet away from your normal     station location and not using any part of a previously erected antenna system or ham station. A campground\, park pavilion\, canopy\, picnic table\, tent\, pop- up camper\, or a backyard shed/tent/deck\, etc may be used. Operation from a non-insulated car/truck/van/boat (mobile or not) is considered “outdoor”. \nHome: Operation from inside a home or inside another structure attached to a home that could or would be the usual location of an Amateur station (garage\, sunroom\, etc)\, generally using a previously erected antenna system. A “Home” entrant may still be eligible to claim the “alternate power” bonus if not using commercial power. Use of any pre -existing (on site) or permanently installed antenna system or station components renders your station a “Home” station. \nEntry Class: your entry “class” is a number designated by the number of stations in your entry that are capable of simultaneoustransmission. (Explained further in summary below)\nExchange: Your WFD exchange will be a combination of your “class” and “category” and your ARRL section as described below\, using an appropriate letter designator or phonetics (examples: 1I\, 2H\, 5I\, 6O\, 3H\, 9I\, etc) In short: Call sign\, Class + Category\, ARRL Section. \n     Example: K4YM this is KB8X\, we are Two Hotel\, Ohio ..or in CW: K4YM de KB8X TU 2H OH… \n        KB8X this is K4YM\, thank you\, we are Twelve India\, West Central Florida ..or in CW: KB8X TU 12I WCF \nIn summary: There are only 3 categories of entry: Indoor\, Outdoor\, and Home as described above and in the definitions. Your entry class will depend on the number in your exchange. That number will be determined by the number of stations capable of simultaneously transmitting at your WFD site. If you only have one station set up\, but plan on using it on several bands and modes (example: 160-2m\, CW\, SSB\, FM\, Digi\, etc)\, the number in your exchange would be “1”. If you have 10 stations set up and operators working at all of them\, regardless of bands\, and modes\, the number in your exchange would be “10”. If you have only two operators\, but have two HF stations set up and a third and possibly fourth station dedicated to VHF\, UHF\, or a Satellite contact\, your exchange number would be “2”\, as one op would have to leave a station idle to make contacts on the other. In other words\, don’t count a station where one station has to be left idle to make contacts on another. Once you decide upon your number of stations (class)\, you must use it for the duration of the contest. An open- air pavilion with no walls would be considered Outdoor as would a tent\, canopy\, or canvas pop-up. An entrant using a plugged-in\, fully enclosed\, insulated\, and centrally heated/cooled motor-home or trailer would be considered “Indoor” although they may still be eligible for “remote” and “alternate power” bonus points. A station set up thusly may still qualify for the “alternate power” bonus if not using commercial power. Conversely\, operation from an un-insulated vehicle (car\, van\, boat\, or truck\, mobile or not) would be considered “outdoor”. In order to claim the “outdoor” bonus\, all stations in your entry must fit the definition\, no exceptions.\nHome: Operation from a place where an amateur station is already or would normally be established\, whether it’s your home or another person’s\, including any enclosed structure attached to the home (garage\, deck\, sunroom) . Use of any pre-existing feed line or pre- mounted antenna system\, such as a backyard tower/beam\, roof antenna\, or previously installed dipole/wire\, or previously installed rig renders your station a “Home” operation. A home station may still claim “alternate power” bonus if using non-commercial power. Operation from another ham’s home other than your own\, from a seasonal rental (..like your Florida/Arizona snowbird condo)\, or from a second home you own would still be considered a “Home” operation unless no equipment\, antennas\, or accessories were present before the stated WFD set-up time (in which case you’d be an “Indoor” entrant and eligible for the “remote/not at home” and possibly the “alternate power” bonuses). \nAllowed Bands:\nThe Amateur non -WARC band allocations recognized by the ITU\, i.e. 160\, 75/80\, 40\, 20\, 15\, 10\, 6\, and 2 meters\, plus the UHF bands. To qualify as a band worked\, at least 1 valid\, non-solicited\, two-way QSO must have taken place on said band during the contest. The WARC bands (30m\, 12m\, & 17m) and 60m are off-limits for WFD QSOs as they are for any other contest. Entrants are strongly advised to avoid parking on recognized national simplex calling channels on the 6m\, VHF\, and UHF bands and use adjacent frequencies. \nSatellite Contact rules: Satellite contacts do not count as a new mode/band multiplier. Satellite contacts are limited to ONEONLY per entry so as to not tie up satellite frequencies with stations calling CQ WFD. A simple CQ (versus CQ WFD) is sufficient and you should be prepared to give a signal report and your VHF Grid Square to the other station versus your normal WFD exchange. A satellite contact is worth 1500 bonus points\, one time only. Making further contacts earns no extra points. If you complete a satellite QSO\, be sure to note the bonus points as well as a short synopsis of the contact in the “Soapbox”. Chances are very good that the other station will not be a WFD contestant and he will likely want a confirmation of the contact afterwards\, especially if your location is remote. Be considerate and comply.\nQualifying WFD QSO: You must copy the full exchange (with the exception of Satellite QSOs\, see above). QSOs may not be solicited… in other words; you may not call someone\, use the internet (email\, IMs\, Facebook or spotting networks) or repeater/digipeater to request/suggest they meet you on any frequency for a WFD QSO or set up a QSO in advance of WFD. The internet\, Echolink\, VOIP\, IRLP\, repeaters\, digi-peaters\, and cross-banding are off-limits and barred from use to make WFD QSOs as they are in all other contests\, with the single exception of a cross-band Satellite QSO. Do not park on the national VHF/UHF/6m calling frequencies to make QSOs. Entrants may not count for QSO credit any contact with anyone who is or was a participant in their WFD operation or is present at their WFD\nlocation. No credit may be taken for QSOs involving\, light\, laser\, or LED unless the stations are more than 1000m distant from each other and the receiving station includes detection circuitry.\nQualifying WFD Modes (underlined): CW\, Phone (includes SSB\, AM\, FM\, Dstar\, C4FM\, Mototurbo… if the end result is voice it’s phone)\, and Digital (includes PSK\, RTTY\, Olivia\, Packet\, SSTV\, ATV and other soundcard modes. We are sure you will find this event a pleasant change and challenge to that of a normal summer time field day. \n\nAbout WFDA\n\n\nDuring 2006 the suggestion for SPAR to sponsor a Winter Field Day was made and after discussions in the Forum\, rules and a date were set. On January 13-14\, 2007 the First Annual Winter Field Day was held and based on comments from participants; this will indeed go down in the record books as the start of an annual tradition. \nIt all started in June when Charles\, N5PVL asked if SPAR would be interested in sponsoring a winter field day activity. There followed a discussion\, proposed rules and modifications\, all culminating in a vote in September approving SPAR’s sponsorship. Next cam a flurry of activities to get the word out on a very short notice and finally\, the actual contest in January. \nWalt (W5ALT) and Charlie (KY5U) contributed greatly to the success of SPAR and WFD. However\, due to medical issues\, activity within SPAR\, their forum and support of WFD have declined. Walt did state in the forum that he was somewhat overloaded. \nMany amateur operators were upset that 2015 scores were not posted and we could not get a response out of SPAR. They also thought that WFD would just fade away. That is when several of us band together and formed Winter Field day Association. \nThe rules were the same until we felt a change in rules was needed. The date is still the last full weekend in January. A committee was setup to get things setup and running.

If you don’t have your Amateur Radio Operators License yet\, you’ll be able to take your Amateur Radio Operators License Exams at Quartzfest©Cost? FREE!!!! \nOur Annual Amateur Radio “get together” is called “Quartzfest©” and is open to ALL to attend. Quartzfest© is not a club\, no officers\, no budget and no dues..and is absolutely FREE!! During the week of Quartzfest©\, RV’s are everywhere across the desert\, as far as you can see..every make and model you can imagine! \nThere are hundreds of groups that meet in Quartzsite every year in different parts of the desert who share like interests. Our group\, Quartzfest©\, started out in 1997 as just a few HAM RV’ersgetting together\, camping in their RV’s in the middle of the desert..no power\, no restrooms\, no running water. Solar Panels and Generators are in use everywhere. The learning also continues well-beyond the technical lectures all the way from morning coffee… through social events\, music\, arts and crafts classes during the day… and into the evening while sitting around the campfire or while star-gazing. \nWe hope you will decide to join us in 2019 which promises to be one of the most exciting editions of this very unique and special ham radio gathering. 73\,\nThe QuartzFest Planning Committee \n\nEarly History\n  \nAfter informally meeting for several years with various ham radio/RV friends\, beginning in 1995 near Mile Marker 99 about six miles south of Quartzsite\, Az\, Harvey K5LJM\, and Margie\, AB5ZX\, decided to officially host a ham gathering around the last week of January\, 1997. They called it Quartzfest and put the word out and had nearly 60 RVs that were parked around the site in the Sonoran Desert. It had a great area to gather for a daily 4:00 social hour every day and also to have a nightly campfire. The last of January was selected to coincide with the RV Sports and Vacation Show and the Gem and Mineral Show. They made it a week long event with seminars\, a ladies coffee\, beef stew dinner and different activities that were of interest to the group. It included volunteers to hold ham radio exams\, donut runs into the local bakery\, firewood gatherers\, and whatever else that added to the group’s enjoyment. \nHarvey and Margie hosted Quartzfest through 2001 then turned it over to Bob\, WA7HRA\, and Anne Hart for 2002 and 2003 and then Harvey and Margie were hosts once again for the 2004 gathering – their last time. Harvey became ill with cancer in late 2004 so we turned to Cap Latimer\, WB6ZDF\, and Tom Hensley\, KD7ALH\, for help and they kindly filled in for us in 2005. Harvey passed away in February of 2005 but Quartzfest lived on with Tom\, KD7ALH\, and Sue\, KD7AMA\, Hensley hosting it in 2006 and 2007. Cliff\, KD4ZBP and Virginia\, KE4VRW\, Haycock hosted Quartzfest 2008\, 2009 and 2010. Now the torch has been passed on to Steve\, K04QT\, and Linda\, KI6JUD\, Weed. After the January 2015 gathering the coordination was turned over to new organizers Dave\, K1AN and Heather\, W8GEM with a newly established QuartzFest Planning Committee that also includes Gordo (WB6NOA)\, Kris (KR1SS)\, Marilynne (W6MCJ)\, Neil (W6FOG)\, Russ (KB6YAF) and Tracy (WA6ERA). \nHarvey always liked to call the gathering just a simple little campout in the desert with good friends sharing a common interest with ham radio and RVs. He thought it very important to have new people attend every year along with the regulars because you need fresh ideas and thinking to keep an event like this going and we tried our best to make everyone feel welcome. Since then Quartzfest has grown to include hundreds of ham radio enthuasists and their families.
